Getting an MRI in Buffalo as a Canadian
Buffalo is the most common choice for Ontario patients who don't want to wait months for a public MRI. It's roughly an hour from Hamilton and under two hours from Toronto, and most people go and come back the same day.
How it works, step by step
- 1
Get a requisition
U.S. imaging centres need a doctor's order. Many Buffalo centres accept a requisition from your Ontario doctor; confirm with the centre before you book.
- 2
Book and send your paperwork
Call or book online, then send the requisition. Several Buffalo centres have dedicated Canadian-patient programs and can often book within days.
- 3
Cross the border
Bring your passport (or NEXUS / Enhanced Driver's Licence for land crossings) and your appointment confirmation. Say plainly that you're going for a self-pay MRI and returning today.
- 4
Pay on the day
You pay the centre directly, in U.S. dollars. A credit card without foreign-transaction fees saves a few percent.
- 5
Results back home
Make sure the centre has your Ontario doctor's fax number for the report, and ask for your images on a CD or download link.
Is Buffalo always the best option?
Not always. Prices in Buffalo are in U.S. dollars, so they move with the exchange rate, and some private clinics in Quebec and Alberta charge less for the same scan. Eastern Ontario patients often find Gatineau, across the river from Ottawa, more convenient.

Will OHIP pay me back?
Usually not. OHIP only funds U.S. imaging in limited cases that are approved in writing by the Ministry of Health before the scan. A prescribed MRI and some travel costs can, however, count toward the Medical Expense Tax Credit on your tax return.
